LPN- ACUTE/ED (Full-time)

Description

Job Summary: Provides direct and indirect patient care in the Emergency Department and Acute floor.  Provides care that meets the psychosocial, physical and general aspects of care; meets the communication needs of patient and family; provides care that reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations, under the supervision of a registered nurse.  Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow through the system.  Communicates with providers about changes in patient’s status, symptomatology and results of diagnostic studies.  Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.

Major Responsibilities: (but not limited)

  1. Provides direct patient care under supervision of a RN, evaluates outcomes, consults with other healthcare team members as required and adjusts nursing care processes as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
  2. Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients, under the direction of an RN, and reassessments as per policy. This includes neonate, pediatric, adolescent and geriatric patients and the general patient population.
  3. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
  4. Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias.
  5. Maintains current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age of the patient and his/her clinical condition.
  6. Follows the seven (7) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
  7. Demonstrates knowledge of lab requirements, requisitions.
  8. Formulates a teaching plan based on identified learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; includes family in teaching, as appropriate.
  9. Demonstrates knowledge of admission process to the hospital when necessary.
  10. Maintains accurate and continued nursing documentation including patient histories, conditions, treatments, responses and assessment of changes.
  11. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  12. Supports and maintains a culture of safety and quality.
  13. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and family.
  14. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and the skills necessary to provide age appropriate care to the patients served. Able to interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s age specific needs and provide care needed by the patient group.
  15. Interacts professionally with patient and family and involves patient and family in the formation of the plan of care.
  16. Maintains established hospital and department policies and procedures, objectives, performance improvement program, safety, environmental and infection prevention and control standards.
  17. Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with emergency department standards.
  18. Ensures an adequate stock of supplies and proper functioning of equipment.
  19. Assists in cost containment through appropriate ordering and conserving of supplies and equipment.
  20. Maintains good working relationship with ED and Acute staff.
  21. Demonstrates the ability to assist providers with procedures and perform services requiring technical and manual skills under the direction of an RN.
  22. Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures.
  23. Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  24. Response to the patient is appropriate in emergency or physically distressful situations.
  25. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
  26. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-services and workshops; shows responsibility for ongoing education.
  27. Performs other related duties as assigned within the LPN scope of practice.

Qualifications

Qualifications: Graduate of a LPN nursing program * State of Idaho licensed LPN * One or more years LPN experience in Acute/ED preferred * References indicating honesty, good attendance, dependability, performance and leadership abilities. * English language skills adequate for effective communications with staff, patients, medical and allied support personnel, public * Positive supportive/coaching approach to co-workers. * Computer skills * Good general health * Work is active, some lifting, bending and twisting required * Ability to deal positively in stressful situations * willing to work varied shifts and weekends as needed* Current BLS certification.

Development and Participation

  1. Attend mandatory staff meetings

2.  Completes mandatory annual education and in-services
